Air New Zealand has stopped serving food and beverages on their domestic flights for the next 24 hours in response to the new community case who works in airline food this afternoon.
Despite the Ministry of Health saying there is no risk of the new case passing on the virus through laundry or food, Air New Zealand Chief Customer and Sales Officer Leanne Geraghty said they are putting safety first.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we have made the decision to suspend our food and beverage offering on all domestic services for the next 24 hours while we await more information from the Ministry of Health," Geraghty said.
"For international flights we will be providing alternative catering options until more information is known.”
Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins and Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield announced three new community cases this afternoon, all of which are from the same household in South Auckland.
One of the cases, the mother works for laundry and catering company LSG Skychefs, which services planes at the airport.
It's understood her main duties at the company involved laundry duties, but she was also involved in some of the packing and preparation of food.
Genomic testing is underway to determine if the cases are any of the newer variants of the virus with results expected later this evening.
New Zealand is still at Alert Level One.
