Thousands feel deep 4.9-magnitude quake off Taranaki coast

Thousands of people have felt a 4.9-magnitude quake after it struck off the coast of Taranaki this afternoon.

The earthquake caused weak shaking after it struck at a depth of 124 kilometres 60 km south-west of Waverley, according to GeoNet.

Around 5368 people reported feeling the quake, with six reporting extreme and severe shaking. 

The earthquake was reportedly felt as far away as New Plymouth and Nelson.
