Motorist have been asked to avoid State Highway 25 near Kuaotunu after a serious crash involving a motorcyclist and a car has resulted in the road being closed.
One person is critically injured and a helicopter has been sent to the scene, police said.
The crash happened around 2.40pm near School of Miners Lane in the Coromandel.
Police said the road could remain closed for some time, with the serious crash unit also dispatched to the area.
