The Ministry of Health says there have been seven new cases of Covid-19 in New Zealand detected over the last two days.

All of the new cases were found at the border, meaning none are in the community.

One of today's new cases arrived from South Africa via the United Arab Emirates, four came from the United States, one from the Czech Republic via United Arab Emirates, and one from the United Kingdom via Qatar.

All of the new cases, which arrived between December 13 and 17, have since been moved into quarantine in either Auckland or Christchurch.

The cases reported today are for the past two days as the Health Ministry has scaled back how often it reports new information.

Meanwhile, 17 previously reported Covid-19 cases have recovered, bringing New Zealand's active cases to 49.

There has been 1772 confirmed cases of the virus in New Zealand since the pandemic began.

There has been 1.38 million tests carried out for Covid-19 in New Zealand.

In a statement today, the Ministry of Health said it is continuing to monitor the situation in the United Kingdom, with the emergence of a new Covid-19 variant known as the B.1.1.7 strain. The new strand is yet to pop up in New Zealand.

As well, the Health Ministry confirmed a Taiwan-based New Zealand pilot linked to an outbreak of Covid-19 in the Asian country had not been infectious while in New Zealand so does not pose a risk here.

The Government's Covid Tracer app now has 2.4 million registered users.

"As we prepare for the summer holiday break, the ministry would like to remind all New Zealanders to keep each other safe and use the Covid Tracer app to scan QR codes and turn on Bluetooth functionality," the Health Ministry said.

"This will allow you to receive an alert if you have been near another app user who tests positive for Covid-19."
