All Blacks Jordie Barrett and Rieko Ioane have put a couple of big hits on each other on the field in recent years but this afternoon they proved they can be just as brutal with one another off it.

Ioane and Barrett spoke to media following the announcement of Ian Foster's first All Blacks side for this Sunday's Bledisloe Test.

Both were named to start in the contest, albeit at different positions than expected with Barrett on the wing and Ioane in the midfield.

During the media session though, the pair took every chance possible to get one up on the other.

Ioane drew first blood, discussing his new role in the midfield with the All Blacks, having spent most of his time on the wing in the black jersey.

"The goal is to find the wings," Ioane said.

"We've got devastating ball runners that usually play on the wing - usually, eh Jordie?"

The quick question got a giggle from media but Barrett soon find an opening for a reply.

Ioane said having played on the wing, he knows what it's like to get stuck with a "greedy centre" so he'll make sure to move the ball on come Sunday.

Barrett won't take any chances though.

"I'll just take the velcro off his hands on Sunday morning," Barrett replied.

Later in the question time, the pair were asked if the team had discussed their recent record in Wellington where they have only won one of their last four Tests.

Being obvlivious to the fact, Ioane instead used it as another chance to take a dig at Barrett, who plays for the Hurricanes in Wellington.

"The pitch isn't too flash that we play on, eh?" Ioane joked.

The question got another laugh from media before he answered seriously that they aren't dwelling on recent results.

The final trade of banter between the two came late in the session, although they lived up to the saying: save the best for last.

Ioane was fielding questions on how he discussed with All Blacks management his desire to play in the midfield before this season had started, saying he wasn't forceful with his approach before trailing off - Barrett saw that as a chance to seize the moment.

"You've been whinging at me for two years to play at centre," Barrett said.

Ioane then replied with a zinger of his own.

"You were crying last night about the 14 jersey, bro."

Both lines got a decent response from reporters.
