North Island shaken by 5.5 magnitude quake

A 5.5 magnitude earthquake was widely felt across the North Island last night.

The 257 kilometre deep quake struck just before 11pm, centred 30 kilometres east of Tauranga.

More than 11 thousand people said they felt the earthquake on GeoNet, reporting mostly weak or light shaking.
