DOC investigating reports of orca tangled up with buoy off Wellington's coast

January 16, 2020

The Department of Conservation is investigating reports of an orca tangled up with a buoy off Wellington's coast.

DOC says they have received two reports of an orca dragging an orange buoy off Pencarrow Head on Wellington's south coast.

"If you spot the orca please note the location and phone our emergency hotline 0800 DOCHOT (0800 362 468) immediately," DOC posted on Twitter this afternoon.

The sighting comes after an orca was injured when it became tangled up in crayfish line in Whāngārei Harbour shortly before Christmas.

That orca was freed days later and is hoped to make a full recovery.
