Two people dead in shooting near Masterton

Two people have died in a shooting near Masterton. 

Police responded to the incident at a rural residential address near Castlepoint just before 5.30am today.

Wairarapa area commander Inspector Scott Miller told media today that the two who died were a man in his fifties and a woman in her forties. 

Police said they are treating the deaths as suspicious and have confirmed the two people were known to each other. 

Both the man and woman are believed to have lived at the address.

Inspector Miller said no one else is being sought over the shooting but police are speaking with several people who also live at the house and witnessed the incident.

While the relationships between the man and woman and the witnesses are yet to be confirmed, Inspector Miller said some of the witnesses were in their mid-20s.

Police say it's believed there is a gun still located at the address.

The Armed Offenders Squad also attended the incident as did two ambulances.

Police are likely to be at the scene for a number of days as investigations continue.

Forensic experts from Auckland and Wellington will arrive at the scene this afternoon.
