A search is underway for a kayaker missing at a lake in Canterbury, south of Christchurch, today.

The person was reported overdue in returning home to Motukarara, at around 12pm, police confirmed to 1 NEWS.

They had been on a kayaking trip at Lake Essmere/Te Waihora.

A helicopter is currently searching the lake for the missing kayaker.
