The last time a New Zealand tennis player won a doubles grand slam was in 1979.

Kiwi doubles superstar Michael Venus has been given a wildcard entry into the main draw of the singles for next week's ASB Classic men's tennis tournament.

Venus will play Tennys Sandgren of the United States in the first round in Auckland - his first singles game in over a year.

The 32-year-old will also play his preferred format of doubles in Auckland next week with Australian John Peers where they are the top seeds.
