The aftermath of yesterday’s high-speed harness racing crash in Cambridge has quickly become a big talking point with some questioning the safety of the carts used by those injured in the pile-up.
Matty White and Todd MacFarlane were both thrown face first on to the track yesterday, suffering concussion and broken limbs while fellow senior drivers Jay Abernethy and David Butcher were also hurt.
Former world driving champion Mark Jones is adamant after yesterday’s mess the safety aspects of the expensive American steel carts should be scrutinised.
“There's no give in them,” Jones told 1 NEWS.
“The old carts used to fold and you wouldn't get flung. The problem is now when we have a crash the resulting injuries are quite bad.
“They are digging in the ground and are human catapults and it's quite dangerous.”
Jones says the carts aren’t just a concern when it comes to crashes like yesterday’s either.
"Another issue we are going to have down the track is if one of these carts hits someone especially in the head it could be disastrous."
