Over 1000 people report feeling deep earthquake which struck off the Coromandel coast this evening.
According to GeoNet, the earthquake measured 5.5 in magnitude and was centred 105km north-east of Whangamata.
It struck at 8.18pm this evening at a depth of 309 kilometres.
Most people reported feeling "weak" shaking from the quake in Wellington.
One Wellington resident told 1 NEWS his apartment made a sound like it was "unsticking" then it gently began to sway.
"It wasn’t violent but definitely made you sit up quickly!" he said of the quake.
