Most military-style assault weapons, like the AR-15 style rifle, used in the Christchurch attacks and in many high-profile mass shootings in the United States, and other high-calibre semi-automatics, are banned.

Also outlawed is any magazine capable of holding more than 10 rounds, and any modification that can make a weapon semi-automatic or fully automatic.

The law exempts some semi-automatic .22 calibre rifles, and shotguns with smaller ammunition capacity, commonly used for pest control.

Police and the military will still be allowed to use semi-automatics, but there'll be no exemptions for international sporting competitions.

Australia and Britain already ban semi-automatic military style weapons.
