Firefighters contain large scrub fire near Cromwell

Firefighters say they have contained a large scrub fire that broke out in hot, dry conditions near Cromwell today.

The fire is understood to have started around 1.30pm at Cornish Point, across from the Kawerau River.

Four helicopters had battled the blaze along with nine fire crews.

Fire and Emergency NZ say the fire is contained and crews are currently in the process of dampening down the area.

They are expected to remain at the scene overnight.
