A pedestrian has died after being hit by a car in Christchurch this morning.

The incident happened about 11.45am near the intersection of Ferry Road and Olliviers Road in the inner-city suburb of Phillipstown.

Diversions are in place and motorists are asked to avoid the area.

The Serious Crash Unit will be attending and the road is expected to remain closed for some time.
