Following the discovery of human remains in Taipa, Northland yesterday, Police have said today they believe the remains were at the site "for several years".
As a result of this any formal identification of the remains could take a while, they say.
Police say that specialist teams were called on site due to the challenging nature of the scrubland terrain.
As scene examinations continue, cordons are expected to remain in place till tomorrow at the site until the remains are removed.
