Signed Crying Kiwi cartoon to raise funds for Islamic community affected by Christchurch attacks

April 11, 2019

Invercargill cartoonist Shaun Yeo's Crying Kiwi image caught the hearts of New Zealanders throughout the country following the Christchurch terrorist attacks on March 15.

Now, he wants to give back by selling a signed copy of the artwork and donating proceeds to the Federation of Islamic Associations of NZ.

On the day of the attacks, Mr Yeo drew up the drawing - a symbol of how many people were feeling on the day.

Since then the work went viral, with people sharing the image and media throughout the world contacting him.

Almost a month on from the attacks where 50 Muslims were killed at two mosques, Trade Me contacted Mr Yeo to see if he would like to help out with an auction to fundraise for those affected by the tragic events.

"Initially they were hoping to auction off the original Crying Kiwi cartoon but sadly I work on a Tablet now so there are no such things as original copies anymore," he said in a Facebook post. "So we thought the next best thing would be a signed print."

The artwork is the only signed copy of the Crying Kiwi anywhere.

All the proceeds from this auction will go to The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand. Trade Me will match the winning bid amount, with a donation to FIANZ.

So far, more than $2000 has been raised.
