The Crusaders have made seven changes to their starting line-up for their Kiwi derby against the Highlanders in Christchurch this week, welcoming back All Blacks Sam Whitelock and Jack Goodhue to the run-on side.

Whitelock and Goodhue’s returns add some experience to the side with All Blacks front rowers Codie Taylor and Owen Franks scratched from the squad altogether after starting against the Brumbies in last week’s big win in Christchurch.

Crusaders coach Scott Robertson said Taylor’s absence is due to a calf which wasn’t "quite right", which means he’s replaced by Andrew Makalio.

Franks is replaced by Michael Alaalatoa due to a shoulder issue.

Robertson said he knows the Highlanders will be dangerous as they look to make stalwart Ben Smith’s 150 th Super Rugby game a winner.

"We’ve picked the best team for this week,” Robertson said.

"We know how desperate the Highlanders are for a win and they’ve certainly mentioned how important this game is to them.

"It’s pretty emotional for anyone to get to 150 – he’s a great player, a great man and a great representative for Highlanders and New Zealand rugby."

The only other change in the forwards sees Whetu Douglas take over the No.6 jersey from Ethan Blackadder, who drops out of the side completely.

In the backs, the other changes besides Goodhue see Bryn Hall take over at halfback and Braydon Ennor taking the right wing.

It means Waikato speedster Sevu Reece gets another start on the left wing, covering the still-injured George Bridge after an impressive display against the Brumbies.

Robertson said Reece is in "hot form" heading into the derby.

"He’s been outstanding on and off the field.

"We’re really fortunate to have quality men out wide."

The Crusaders and Highlanders square off on Friday night.
