A cyclist has immortalised the laser kiwi, made iconic during the flag debate, thanks to his trusty bike and a route-tracking app.
On Sunday, Aucklander Carl Wells cycled for 28 kilometres around parts of more than five different Auckland suburbs, including the Ellerslie racetrack, for his annual birthday 'mystery Strava-art ride'.
"I was a Red Peak fan, but I felt like the laser kiwi will always be with us," the Boston native told Stuff. "It represents the powerful kiwi, not just a flightless bird."
The laser kiwi was one of hundreds of submissions in the 2015 New Zealand flag referendum.
The GPS masterpiece, which took 22 cyclists and three months of planning to create, was made to raise funds for Cool Earth, a charity working with indigenous villages to protect endangered rainforests from the effects of climate change and global warming.
Mr Wells' eclectic choice of art has since raised $860 for the charity.
