Napier Mayor Bill Dalton is in a critical condition at Hawke's Bay Hospital after suffering a stroke last night.
"We are with him and we expect his condition to become clearer over the coming days," a statement from his family says.
"We would like to thank everyone for their kind wishes and support at this very difficult time."
Further information on Mr Dalton's condition is unavailable at this time, the Napier City Council said in a press release.
"Our heartfelt thoughts and very best wishes are with our Mayor, his wife Shirley and his family at this time," the council said.
