Barriers to obtaining a drivers licence for young people on youth benefits are to be slashed by the Government.

A scheme was launched today to cut the cost of obtaining a birth certificate for identification, professional driving lessons and test fees.

The scheme will be aimed at young people on the youth payment, young parent payment schemes, or in Oranga Tamariki care.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said about 2500 young people would be eligible for the scheme which intends to help with employment opportunities.

"Some young people don’t have a car to learn in, identification documents or the support of family and friends to get their driver licence.

"A driver licence is more than just a licence to drive. It’s a vital tool and opens doors to education and jobs."

She said it was a "small investment" to support young people.

The scheme begins on June 1, with NZTA's safety fund providing $5 million, and $250,000 from Ministry of Social Development.
