An Autombile Association spokesperson thinks using traffic enforcement cameras might help curb New Zealand's distracted driver problem.

AA's Principal Advisor of Regulations Mark Stockdale says accidents from people driving while on their cellphones is "probably underreported".

After a horror week on New Zealand roads saw nearly 30 people killed , Mr Stockdale appeared on Seven Sharp to talk about how we could stop people from using phones while driving.

"Penalties will only work if police are catching you and the reality is people know they can get away with it because they have done it before and don't get caught.

"It isn't until you have an accident that you know how distracting it is," he said.

Mr Stockdale had a couple of ideas that may help the issue.

"There are apps on your phone where you can put it in do not disturb mode and flight mode features so we need to be doing that.

"Also there is technology in other countries where they use speed cameras and other enforcement cameras to see that people are using cellphones while driving.

"That’s a technological solution where you don't need police everywhere and if people start getting tickets for these offences it might help change their behaviour."
