Some of Auckland's roads were today taken over by around 2000 bikies, revving their engines for a good cause.

The Ride for Justice aims to raise awareness for animal welfare.

It comes as advocates plea for the government to step up, saying cruelty issues are about more than pets.

"Companion animals do need help as well but when we look at the numbers involved, the number of animals that are suffering, that's why at SAFE we focus on farmed animals primarily, because it's hundreds of millions of animals that are suffering," says Marianne Macdonald, SAFE Head of Campaigns.
