Former New Zealand beach volleyballer Kelsie Wills is switching codes, trying out her hand in the game of rugby union.

The 26-year-old made it to the beach volleyball women's Commonwealth Games quarter-final last year in the Gold Coast, but is now having a crack playing lock at the Mount Maunganui Rugby club.

She admits the transition at first was a bit tricky.

"I was a bit nervous about the contact thing at first, after I got smashed a couple of times - it's ok yeah, good to go," said Wills.

This is the first time Wills has spent away from the beach, saying making a career out of beach volleyball has had its difficulties.

"I would have to fully invest like all my time, I wouldn't be able to work and what not which I kind of need to live."

Wills hasn't ruled out a return to beach volleyball, but strives to see where she can go in the sport of rugby union.
