Sydney train commuters tell man spouting religious, anti-abortion message, 'Just shut up!'

April 5, 2019

A crowd of commuters on a Sydney train had their journey interrupted by a preacher who started delivering a religious, anti-abortion message on board, sparking an angry backlash from some and cheers when one passenger told him to shut up.

Video of the incident has been posted on social media by a group called Torch of Christ Ministries, with a message dated Tuesday of this week.

A man standing in the carriage identifies himself, saying he's from the United States, and asks for "three minutes of your time if you don't mind", adding, "I'm not here to offend anyone, I'm here to give you hope".

After saying he's "left everything" and been to over 28 countries in the last two years to share the Gospel, he tells passengers, "We care more about saving the whales than we care about saving the unborn children".

A man sitting behind him interrupts with, "Thanks mate, thank you."

But the preacher is undaunted, saying, "No, I'm not going to stop because I love you that much.  We have to return to living in a moral way. Our children..."

The man who interrupted tells him, "You have no more right than anyone else on this bus. Just shut up!"

Another man chimes in with, "Yeah, shut up."

The first man is cheered by other passengers as he tells the preacher, "Who's the selfish one here mate? Who's the one who won't shut up with their opinions. How selfish is that!"

The episode is punctuated at times by an automated voice of a woman announcing the train's route and the next stop.

When it stops a large group of passengers disembark and others get on, with the preacher still in argument with the man who first interrupted him.

The video ends soon after a woman further down the carriage tells the preacher, "No one wants to hear it, bro, Be quiet. Why don't you go and stand on the street with you f***ing signs."

The clip, posted on You Tube with the message "Anti-abortion preaching triggers fierce backlash on train in Sydney" has had more than 34,500 views and attracted more than 2,000 comments.

They're largely negative towards the preacher and his use of a train where people have no choice but to hear him.
