Weeks after a pair of red ear turtles went missing from a West Auckland early childcare centre, they have returned under mysterious circumstances.

Bill and Ben disappeared from Flanshaw Early Childhood Centre earlier this month, leaving the kids upset.

"We went to feed the turtles, as we do, and then we realised the turtles were gone," head teacher Sophie Henderson told TVNZ1's Seven Sharp.

The centre believes there was a degree of premeditation as well, with the thieves cutting power to the enclosure's water filter and removing that too.

This morning the turtles were anonymously left outside the front door of the school next door.

They seem to be in good health and were quickly returned to their former home - leading to a happy ending to the reptilian mystery.
