Truck carrying livestock crashes in Ashburton, 150 sheep dead

One hundred and fifty sheep are dead after a truck and trailer unit carrying sheep flipped in Ashburton in Canterbury.

Police confirmed the number of livestock deaths to 1 NEWS.

The crash occurred at about 10.45am on Moorhouse Road near Cliffords Road, Ruapuna Ashburton.

A total of 500 sheep were in the B-Train truck and trailer unit.

Vets are currently on scene, and are euthanising injured sheep.

Uninjured sheep are being taken to a nearby paddock.

Police say the driver of the truck was assessed at the scene for minor injuries.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area and follow any diversions which will be put in place.
