Raw sewage found at popular swimming spot in Wellington

March 29, 2019
Wellington

Raw sewage has been found at a popular swimming spot in Wellington.

People are being warned against swimming or entering the water in the inner harbour, particulary in the Taranaki Street Wharf area between Whairepo Lagoon and the waterfront area around Shed 6.

In a statement Greater Welllingon Regional Council says the source of the contamination appears to be illegal connections between stormwater pipes and sewage, but Wellington Water is continuing to investigate.

Recent stormwater testing near Taranaki Wharf by the water company has shown very high levels of faecal coliforms [raw sewage] which has made the water unsafe.

Entering the water could lead to symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or infections of the eyes, ears, nose and throat.

Anyone with health concerns is urged to contact their doctor or Healthline 0800 611 116.
