Kiwi diver Ant Williams has claimed the world record for the deepest dive under ice, reaching a depth of 70m in Norway.

Overseen by Guiness World Records, the Kiwi-born diver reached his target, telling Australia's ABC that it was more difficult than anticipated.

"I got a successful dive to 70 metres under the ice," he said.

"The dive took much longer than I was expecting and it was vastly harder than I thought it would be."

The previous record was 65m.

Williams was raised in West Auckland, but now lives and trains in Melbourne.
