New Zealand's Jewish community is heartbroken by the Christchurch terrorist attack which left 50 Muslim worshipers dead, and says the two groups are "stronger together".

In the wake of the March 15 attack, synagogues and Jewish community centres were closed for the first time, and some police protection was put in place.

Juliet Moses from the New Zealand Jewish Council says her community has always been aware of being a potential target, and there had been a "heightened sense of nervousness" in recent weeks, she told TVNZ1's Seven Sharp.

In October 11 people were killed at Pittsburgh's Tree of Life Synagogue by a man who had expressed some white nationalist views.

The man accused of carrying out the Christchurch atrocity had allegedly expressed far right views.

Moses said both the Jewish and Muslim communities had to be vigilant in the face of such ideology.

“We are stronger together, we have to unite and face this scourge together."
