Stong winds up to 120km/h forecast to hit Wellington and surrounding areas

The capital is living up to it's reputation as New Zealand's windiest city with a strong wind warning issued for Wellington for today and tomorrow.

The Wellington Region Emergency Management Office issued the warning of severe gale northwesterlies for Wellington and Wairarapa.

Gusts are expected to pick up to 120km/h in exposed areas from 1pm today to 3pm tomorrow.

The West Coast is also expected to be hit with wild weather today, with motorists are being warned about slips and surface flooding after heavy rain in Fiordland and Westland.
