Police say 'execution style' Tauranga shooting of gang-member turned Christian was linked to earlier Mongrel Mob killing

March 14, 2019

Police have released new information on an "execution style" shooting in Tauranga last year which left a 52-year-old man dead, saying they believe it was related to the Mongrel Mob.

David Kuka, 52, was killed at his Tauranga home on Wilrose Place in February last year.

Police said they believe the death could be a case of mistaken identity, and in a release today they revealed they now think it was gang related.

Mongrel Mob Notorious life member Lance Waite was shot at the same location five weeks earlier.

Police said that Mr Kuka was previously affiliated to the gang many years ago, and said that he had since turned into a devout Christian who mostly kept to himself.

Police are still seeking information about a silver sedan which was seen in the Greerton area coming and going from Welcome Bay on the night of February 11.

The case will be re-visited in the upcoming episode of Police Ten 7 on TVNZ 2 tonight at 7.30pm, and police said the piece will contain more information.

Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to call Detective Sergeant Paul Barron on 07 577 4384, or to call the Police Ten 7 information line on 0800 107 4636.
