The NRL appear closer than ever to the historic appointment of a female referee for a first grade game, following encouraging performances in pre-season.
As rugby league's premier competition prepares for their 2019 season launch this weekend, NRL senior referees manager Bernard Sutton says that the displays of both Belinda Sharpe and Kasey Badger bode well for the first female refereeing appointment in a regular season clash.
Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Sutton singled out Sharpe's pre-season efforts, confident she can take charge of a first-grade clash.
"We saw her officiate two games across the trials and she did quite a commendable job," Sutton said.
"She did a good job in the trials and there is no doubt that we are edging closer to that moment."
Sutton continued to say that both Sharpe and Badger have earned their chance to officiate in the NRL, rather than a token appointment based solely on gender.
"What I know from both Kasey and Belinda is that when they do get that opportunity, it is because they have achieved it on their merits.
"We are really confident with their progression and we will monitor that and see where that takes us."
The NRL begins tomorrow night, with the Melbourne Storm hosting the Brisbane Broncos.
