Young Warriors second rower Isaiah Papali'i has been stood down for the New Zealand club’s first round NRL match this Saturday after a drink driving offence during the off-season.
Warriors coach Stephen Kearney revealed the decision today during a press conference at Mount Smart Stadium in Auckland, although at the time refused to say why Papali'i wouldn't be playing.
The NRL club released a statement this afternoon about the 20-year-old's suspension, with Warriors CEO Cameron George saying he was disappointed about the news.
"We expect better from our players and anyone who falls short of our standards will be appropriately dealt with irrespective of the time of year or their standing within the club," said George.
"Isaiah is extremely remorseful for his actions. He feels like he's let his team-mates, the club, our fans and his family down.
Kearney wouldn't reveal what the issue was, but said the 20-year-old is available next week. (Source: Other)
"He is now determined to win back their respect and will also be fighting hard to earn back his spot in the team.”
The Warriors begin their 2019 campaign against the Canterbury Bulldogs at Mount Smart Stadium in Auckland on Saturday.
