A police officer was attacked and a police car was damaged after gang members arrived on the scene while police were attending a family harm incident in Whangarei on the weekend.
The incident took place at 9:45am Saturday morning when police were called to a report of a family harm incident in Otangarei.
At the scene a man was found with a stab wound and he was transported to hospital in a serious condition.
Police say an 18-year-old man was taken into custody but has since been released and the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
While at the scene, a number of people, including gang members arrived and an officer was assaulted from behind.
The officer didn't receive any injuries in the attack, however a police car was damaged during the incident.
Police say they then deployed pepper spray "due to the aggressive and violent behaviour of those individuals".
The person who allegedly damaged the police car and a 23-year-old man have appeared in the Whangarei District Court today on related charges.
