A New Zealand team has defended the title of sailing's 18 foot skiff world championship in Sydney this weekend.

NZ sailors of the Year for 2018 Matt Steven, Brad Collins and Dave McDiarmid of team Honda Marine defended their title on day six of racing, winning the trophy with a day to spare.

Honda Marine has dominated throughout the championship, winning four races of eight.

They came in second yesterday after New Zealand's ASCC.

Today's race ends the JJ Giltinan Championship, with New Zealand teams taking away seven wins of the eight races so far.

"We're pretty stoked to take away the title this year, last year there was quite a lot of pressure," Steven said.

"This year we were more relaxed and have had a lot of fun."

Honda Marine are looking to push for a home 2020 JJs championship, which has been held in Sydney since the late 70s.

Last year was the first New Zealand win in 44 years, and New Zealand's first ever on Sydney's tricky harbour
