Leon MacDonald spoke of his relief having picked up his first win as Blues coach, as his side defeated the Sunwolves 28-20 in Albany last night.

Having been defeated by the Crusaders, Sharks and Jaguares in the first three weeks of this season's Super Rugby competition, the Blues prevailed over the Sunwolves to avoid a fourth straight loss.

A four try haul from winger Rieko Ioane  saw the Blues finally end their winless run, lifted off the bottom of Super Rugby's New Zealand conference, with MacDonald opening up to media afterwards.

"It's been a tough few weeks, and though it wasn't pretty I thought we toughed it out. And we deserved the win in the end," he began.

"There was some really good stuff amongst a little bit of muddly stuff. But overall it was a good collective effort and they grinded it out."

"We're not far away and just have to keep working hard at our game every week. What's been really impressive with all the distractions and travel and everything going on, the guys are really committed to getting better.

"We just needed a little bit of something to go our way and the belief to start growing. It's a great opportunity now to have a week off and regroup."

The Blues will now have a week off thanks to a bye, before resuming their season against the Highlanders on March 22.
