Despite having been handed three straight losses to begin the 2019 Super Rugby season, Blues coach Leon MacDonald is confident his side have what it takes to turn their season around.

Having been defeated by the Crusaders, Sharks and Jaguares in the first three weeks of this season's Super Rugby competition, the Blues tonight welcome the Sunwolves to Albany, out to avoid a fourth straight loss.

What's more, the Blues have been rocked off field, with prop Mike Tamoaieta's sudden passing hitting MacDonald's side hard. The team farewelled the well-liked prop in Auckland yesterday.

Speaking to Stuff, though, MacDonald says that there's no need to panic. He says he's certain his side can bounce back and re-ignite their campaign.

"I've got a lot of confidence in where we're heading and what we're doing," he said. "It's just continuing what we're doing. I've got a lot of trust we're going to get there.

"We're through round three of a 16-week competition, so there's no panic from our end. The solutions are at hand and we're working hard at them."

Having been pipped by the Crusaders by two points, and the Jaguares by four, signs are boding well for the Blues - showing they can compete with Super Rugby's best sides.

"It's not all dire and, given the circumstances and how tough it is over there, there's a lot to be positive about," he said.

"We're only a whisker away. That's the belief we've got to take into the next few rounds, knowing we're not far away at all."

The Blues host the Sunwolves in Albany later tonight.
