One person has died after a motorcycle crashed into a power pole in the eastern Bay of Plenty early this morning.

The incident occurred on Ruatoki Valley Road, south of Whakatāne, at around 12.25am, police said.

The road was closed following the incident, but was later reopened at 4.45am.

The Serious Crash Unit has examined the scene.

A police investigation is ongoing.
