Ross Taylor's 181 v England named world's best ODI innings of 2018

The Black Caps batsman belted 181 not out to claim the fourth ODI in Dunedin.

Black Caps batsman Ross Taylor's stunning knock of 181 not out against England in Dunedin has been awarded the best ODI innings of 2018, as ESPN Cricinfo dished up their end of season awards overnight.

With centuries from Jonny Bairstow (138) and Joe Root (102), England posted an imposing 339/5 from their 50 overs, with the Black Caps reduced to 2/2 in their attempts for a series levelling victory at University Oval.

However, batting on one leg Taylor bought up his hundred from 98 balls, before taking to the England attack, belting 17 fours and six sixes on his way to his highest ODI score, as the Black Caps chased down the total with three balls and five wickets to spare.

Speaking to Cricinfo, Taylor played down his achievement, saying he was happy to simply end up on the winning side.

"It's nice," he began.

"You don't go out there to try and get those type of awards, but it's nice to get the acknowledgment."

Taylor's mammoth innings beat out the likes of India's Virat Kohli's 160 against South Africa, and England's Jason Roy's score of 180 against Australia.
