Police have moved to reassure the public after a violent gang brawl at a speedway on the outskirts of Christchurch yesterday.
The incident occurred at the Mike Pero Motorsport Park in Templeton, where members from two rival motorcycle gangs were watching motorcycle racing.
The event was without incident for several hours until a new group of people from one of the gangs reportedly arrived and a fight ensued , police said today.
A number of gang members were involved in the altercation and some of them ended up hospitalised with injuries ranging from moderate to serious.
“This was an isolated incident between these two groups of people and did not present a risk to the general public,” Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam said.
However the behaviour is very concerning and police would still like to hear from anyone who has any further information to share, he said.
Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to contact Christchurch Police on (03) 363 7400 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
