The Black Caps have moved up to second place in the ICC Test cricket rankings.

New Zealand had a chance to reach the feat in December last year, but only managed to beat Sri Lanka 1-0 in their two Test match series.

They drew their first Test against Sri Lanka in Wellington.

Sri Lanka's 2-0 Test series win over South Africa has now pushed New Zealand into second place, however.

The Black Caps sit on 107 points with India ranked in first place on 116 points in the ICC ranking, which was updated yesterday.

South Africa dropped to just 105 points following their losses to Sri Lanka, a fall of five points.

ICC men's Test rankings:

1. India - 116
2. New Zealand - 107
3. South Africa - 105
4. Australia - 104
5. England - 104
6. Sri Lanka - 93
7. Pakistan - 88
8. West Indies - 77
9. Bangladesh - 69
10. Zimbabwe - 13
