Two men have been charged after they allegedly attempted to smuggle 110kg of methamphetamine and two handguns into the country inside golf cart batteries.

A 39-year-old Taiwanese national and a Chinese national, 27, were arrested by Customs investigators over the weekend, Customs said in a statement.

The two men will face charges for the importation and possession of a Class A controlled drug. Under the NZ Drug Harm Index, the seizure prevented an estimated social harm of $136.3 million.

The pair are set to appear in Auckland District Court this afternoon.

It comes after Customs officials inspected a shipping container of three six-seater golf carts, exported from the US, last month. Close examination revealed large, ice-like methamphetamine crystals and two handguns hidden by the batteries.

The two men were arrested following searches of two residential properties in west and south Auckland over the weekend.

Anyone with suspicions about someone involved in illegal drug smuggling is urged to call 0800 4 CUSTOMS (0800 428 786), or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
