Wellington Pizza Hut slammed for ‘sexist’ job ad, prompting apology

February 21, 2019

A Pizza Hut franchise in New Zealand has been blasted after it specifically advertised for women to apply for a job.

The Newtown branch in Wellington posted on popular Facebook page Vic Deals, saying it was looking for "two girls" to join their "front of house" team. It’s believed the person who wrote the ad is one of the store's managers.

The post was deleted within an hour after people were quick to complain, with some accusing the ad of being “sexist” and “illegal” and others vowing they’d never go there again.

When approached by 1 NEWS, another of the store’s managers repeatedly confirmed the business was looking for two girls to apply, but he backtracked when reminded it’s illegal in New Zealand to discriminate against prospective employees based on sex.

“Anyone can apply, it doesn’t matter if they are a boy or a girl,” he later said.

He then refused to answer anymore questions before speaking to head office.

A Pizza Hut spokesperson told 1 NEWS in a statement the company was disappointed to see the post from the franchisee-owned store and offered an apology for any offense it caused.

Representatives from the parent company will be speaking to the Newtown team to remind them of Pizza Hut’s strict policy around fair and equal employment opportunities, the spokesperson said.
