Hundreds gathered for Auckland's Pride March in the central city this evening.

The larger-scale Pride Parade was scrapped last year after the decision to ban police in uniform from participating.

The Pride March started from Albert Park in a nod to LGBTI because it's where New Zealand's first gay liberation protest was held in 1972.

"I'm not disappointed at all. I am deeply moved, to be part of this. This is a very moving experience,” Cissy Rock of the Auckland Pride Board said of tonight’s march.

The low-cost march follows several sponsors pulling funding from the Pride Parade in the wake of the police uniforms controversy.
