Black Sticks striker Olivia Merry says that the team were out to prove a point in last night's 5-1 victory over Great Britain in Christchurch, picking up their first win in the new FIH Pro League.

Having been beaten in their opening matches against Belgium and the Netherlands respectively, the Black Sticks responded in style, defeating Olympic champions Great Britain 5-1, with Merry bagging a hat-trick.

Speaking to 1 NEWS after the match, Merry spoke of the desire to notch an elusive first Pro League win.

"We probably haven't put out our best performances in the first two game, we wanted to right our wrongs," Merry said.

"Goal scoring was definitely one of those, we haven't scored many goals so far.

"We've come a long way, but we've still got a long way to go. It's pretty pleasing to get that first win on the board."

Merry also said that the side were happy to get one over the reigning Olympic champions, less than 18 months out from the Tokyo 2020 games.

"They're a quality side, they've got some pretty incredible players.

"It's pretty awesome to come away with a win, but our focus now changes to Germany and China."
