The scene at the Tasman fire near Nelson has been described by one of the evacuees today as being "like Armageddon…like the end of the world".
As the sun set and smoke billowed over a red sky with helicopters carting water to fight the blaze, Caroline Thomas and her neighbours gathered on a nearby hill to see if the fire would claim their homes after being evacuated this afternoon.
"We’re actually at Richmond at my other daughter’s place and they all said we had a good view up here so and it was getting very close to our house so we thought we better see what’s going on," she told 1 NEWS.
"It’s a bit like Armageddon, it’s a bit like the end of the world, it could be the end of our world for a little while."
"We’re at the mercy of the weather, the fire crew has been absolutely fantastic, we can’t ask for anymore."
"Everything has been ripped out from underneath you if that happens, you just feel absolutely helpless, it’s a horrible, horrible feeling."
The perimeter of the Tasman fire increased today as the wind picked up and the humidity was reduced.
The out-of-control blaze has so far claimed one home after it started on Tuesday.
