The last time you went to buy a big appliance, did they offer you a dirty power filter or surge protector as they are otherwise known?
When Seven Sharp's Tim Wilson needed a washing machine, he rang Harvey Norman.
But then they started talking about dirty power.
Professor Neville Watson knows his electricity. He’s New Zealand’s foremost authority on power quality.
"You’ve got to consider whether you need a surge protector," says Prof Watson.
"If you are in a rural area where you are likely to get some type of spike due to the conditions it might be worth it but if it’s the inner city particularly if you’ve got an underground connection, it’s very unlikely you need a surge protector," he says.
So are they or aren’t they needed in our Kiwi households?
