National Party leader Simon Bridges today fared somewhat better than the Prime Minister did yesterday in an impromptu 1 NEWS quiz about what the Treaty of Waitangi says.
But Mr Bridges all-but admitted he'd had a quick refresher course after seeing Jacinda Ardern stumble with her answers yesterday.
"Article Two of the Treaty, what does it say?" our reporter asked Mr Bridges at his media stand-up at Waitangi today.
"It's about rangatiratanga," Mr Bridges replied promptly.
"Article One is about kawanatanga and the idea of governance and that going of course to the Crown, but also ensuring protection for Māori. Article Two follows that on and is very much about ensuring that Māori have the ability to get on and to do things," he said.
Asked by reporters had he had a refresher course, the National leader replied with laughter, "What do you reckon?"
The PM did answer with a little help from colleagues and says she expects the Treaty to be taught in schools. (Source: Other)
Mr Bridges also said he's on a journey to speak more fluent te reo and understand his line of descent better.
"I'm the first Māori leader of a major political party and I don't wear that cloak lightly," he said.
"I hope people can see, including you, that I am certainly far from perfect but trying to get there on a journey, and speak better, more fluent te reo and also understanding my whakapapa better."
