All Blacks and Crusaders flanker Matt Todd has opened up about the appeal of Japanese rugby, with more and more players opting to leave New Zealand.

While traditionally New Zealand Rugby has had to be wary of European clubs swooping on the best and brightest talent, Japan's Top League has emerged in recent years as a serious option for players, with the timing of the Japanese season allowing for players to leave on a short term basis, before returning home.

Speaking to 1 NEWS, 30-year old Todd explained why Japan was a more appealing option than Europe, having turned out for the Panasonic Wild Knights.

"It's certainly grown," Todd began.

"It's a lot closer than Europe for players that are going overseas, you're only one flight away.

"More guys are going up there, coming back and telling other guys about it. The appeal is growing.

"Guys didn't look at it [Japan] before, but now, people are more aware of it and know that the opportunity is up there."

Todd also said that Japan's steps to incorporate more overseas talent is playing a part in the increasing exodus, with squad selection rules more accommodating for Kiwis.

"They've increased their quota numbers for foreigners and that. There's more spots available up there for foreigners.

"More Kiwis will look at it, and no doubt go up there and play and experience the footy and the culture that Japan has to offer."
